Help Choosing Parts for a Modern Gaming and Video-Editing PC

I built my current PC back in 2015, and aside from the case and two Crucial SSDs, I'm expecting to replace nearly everything. I'm a fairly casual gamer—not chasing maximum frame rates, competitive performance, or streaming—but I want modern games to run smoothly. I'm not gaming in 4K yet, though I'd like the system to be capable of handling 4K when I eventually upgrade my monitor. I also do photography and some video work, so strong rendering performance would be useful.

My budget is roughly $1,500–$2,500 USD, and I'll be buying parts gradually. I'd prefer to keep my Corsair Vengeance C70 ATX case if it remains compatible, and my existing SSDs seem usable for storage. The parts I'm considering include an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D or a less expensive Intel Core Ultra 5 250K, a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 cooler, 32GB of Corsair Vengeance memory, and an MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk AM5 motherboard.

I'm most unsure about the graphics card. How much VRAM should I target for modern gaming—8GB, 16GB, or more? Which GPU tier makes sense for smooth 1440p gaming now and occasional 4K later, and how much should brand or cooler design matter? I'm also unsure whether 32GB of RAM is truly necessary, what wattage and quality level to look for in a power supply, and whether my old case fans will be adequate. I know many current motherboards include Wi-Fi, so I may not need a separate adapter.

I'm concerned that I'm being drawn toward expensive, high-end parts when a cheaper processor or graphics card would meet my needs. What would you change about this plan, and where would it make sense to save money?

You can get by with 16GB for gaming, but 32GB is becoming the comfortable baseline and is worthwhile for multitasking, editing, and future-proofing. I’d buy a matched 2x16GB kit rather than one 16GB stick and adding another later, since matching kits are generally simpler and more reliable.

Your SATA SSDs can still be used, but adding a modern NVMe SSD would improve large file transfers and make it a better working drive for video projects. Keep the older SSDs for games or bulk storage if they’re healthy. For the power supply, prioritize a reputable model with a good efficiency and reliability rating; 850W is useful for a higher-end GPU, but the right wattage depends on the card. Don’t buy a low-quality unit just because it has enough advertised wattage.

A quality power supply is worth treating as a foundation for the whole build. Choosing one with some capacity beyond the estimated load will also make future GPU upgrades less stressful.

There’s a compatibility issue in the parts list: the B850 motherboard uses AMD’s AM5 socket, so it cannot run the Intel Core Ultra 5 250K. If you stay with that board, choose an AM5 processor instead. The Ryzen 5 9600X is a more sensible value option, while an X3D chip makes more sense if gaming performance and future upgrades are priorities.

For memory, 32GB is a very reasonable target, especially if you multitask while gaming or work with photos and video. Most current boards also offer built-in Wi-Fi when the model name specifically includes it. For graphics cards, something in the Radeon RX 7600/7600 XT class is a budget-friendly option, though it is better suited to 1080p or moderate 1440p than demanding 4K.

I completely missed that the motherboard was AMD-only. Since a 16GB kit isn’t much cheaper than 32GB, I’ll probably go with 32GB. I’ll also compare the GPU options you suggested.

If you can fit it into the budget, staying with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D gives you excellent gaming performance and keeps you on a platform with a better upgrade path. The Intel option may be cheaper initially, but that platform has less room for future CPU upgrades, while AMD has indicated that newer processors will continue to support AM5.

For the graphics card, the Radeon RX 9070 XT is a strong value-oriented choice for this kind of build. It should handle current games very well at 1440p and can deliver respectable 4K performance, although no card reliably runs every demanding game at 4K ultra settings above 60 FPS. GPU brand matters less than the specific cooler, noise level, warranty, and price, so compare those rather than assuming one brand is automatically best.

The platform longevity is a good point. I had overlooked that the Intel socket may be a dead end, so I’ll compare the 9800X3D and RX 9070 XT more seriously.
