I was recording a video on my laptop, but unfortunately, the battery died and the laptop turned off during the process. Now, the file is unplayable. I've found a few tools online that claim to fix it, but they're charging crazy prices. This video is really important since it's footage for my friend's birthday, and I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions to recover it.

You might want to try VLC Media Player; it's free and does a pretty good job at fixing corrupted files, though it can't guarantee a perfect recovery. It will extract whatever it can to create a new video file. Just give it a shot!

I attempted using VLC but had no luck. Did I miss something? What are the specific steps I should follow?
