How can a complete beginner install ZeroTier on LMDE?

I recently switched from Windows to Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) and want to keep using ZeroTier for some multiplayer games. The official installer fails because it does not recognize LMDE correctly. I found a proposed fix that involves downloading and editing the installer script, but I have very little Linux experience. Is this safe and realistic for a beginner, and could someone explain the exact steps in simple terms?

The linked fix is essentially making the installer treat LMDE as Debian. Instead of piping the installer directly into a shell, download it first so you can inspect and edit it. Open a terminal and run:
`curl -s https://install.zerotier.com > install-zt.sh`
Then open the downloaded file in a text editor, such as with `xed install-zt.sh` or another editor you already have installed. Find these lines:
`source /etc/os-release`
`if [ $ID == "debian" ] || [ $ID == "raspbian" ]; then`
Add this line between them:
`ID="debian"`
Save the file, then run:
`chmod +x install-zt.sh`
`sudo ./install-zt.sh`
The first command makes the script executable, and the second runs it with administrator privileges. Read through the script before running it, and remember that forcing the Debian check is a workaround; it could install packages that are not perfectly matched to your system.

MellowCrayon42: I was initially confused about where the script would be, but downloading it with the first command made that clear. It appeared in my current folder, and I was able to open and edit it.
QuietPebble19: A cleaner long-term solution would be for the installer to officially support LMDE, since manually pretending to be Debian can potentially select the wrong package sources. The workaround may function, but proceed carefully and keep a backup or be ready to remove the installation if needed.
