I'm interested in areas such as digital protection for at-risk communities, keeping activists safe online, disaster-response connectivity, and other practical technology work. Outside university, I also spend time on homelabbing, embedded systems, and web development.
For people with relevant experience: is it better to enter humanitarian technology directly after graduating, or build several years of experience in mainstream IT first? Which organizations are worthwhile for volunteering or entry-level applications? Are there certifications or types of experience that genuinely matter, and what should I focus on now so I can make a useful contribution rather than simply collect credentials?

Finish your degree and build a solid technical foundation first. A help-desk or junior infrastructure role can give you the troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and operational experience that humanitarian organizations often need. Volunteer alongside that when possible; it can help you understand the work, meet people in the field, and build a reputation before applying for paid roles. Humanitarian work can be rewarding, but salaries and organizational processes are not always great, so plan realistically and make sure you genuinely care about the mission.
Volunteering is probably one of the best ways in. It lets you contribute immediately while learning how these organizations actually operate, and it gives people a chance to see that you're dependable. Look for opportunities involving technology support, cybersecurity, communications, disaster response, or digital safety rather than limiting yourself to jobs with a specific humanitarian title. Relationships and a track record of useful work often matter more than having a long list of certificates.
Cybersecurity could be a particularly strong path in New Zealand right now. Gaining experience in areas such as security operations, penetration testing, cloud security, or incident response can help local organizations as well as international groups they work with. Focus on hands-on projects, clear technical writing, and safely demonstrating what you can do; those are usually more valuable than collecting certifications without practical experience.
Before committing completely, keep your expectations realistic. Some nonprofits and aid organizations have limited budgets, weak IT processes, and low pay. You may have less opportunity to learn than you would in a well-run commercial technology team. One practical route is to become highly competent in cybersecurity, cloud, networking, or infrastructure first, then use those skills through volunteer projects, pro-bono work, or targeted applications. That gives you more leverage to make a real difference while keeping your career sustainable.
