I'm in 11th grade and have been learning programming for the past few years. I'm comfortable with Java and know some Python, but I recently started building a website even though I barely know HTML, CSS, or JavaScript. I relied on AI to generate most of it, planning to learn along the way, but now I don't understand what my own code is doing and can't work on the site without AI. I've also started using AI for Java projects and feel like I'm forgetting concepts I previously understood. I want to stop treating AI as a crutch and rebuild my skills. Has anyone dealt with this? What practical steps helped you rely on AI less while still continuing to learn?

Go back to the way you learned Java and Python before using AI. Pick a small project, write your own code, read the documentation, and debug it step by step. If a tool suggests a command or solution, don’t use it until you can explain what every part does. It’s fine to spend extra time on a small side project when you discover a concept you don’t understand.
Work on one language or area without AI for a while. For example, make a small HTML and CSS project using only documentation, then add simple JavaScript once the basics make sense. Building tiny projects from scratch will feel slower than generating a complete website, but you’ll retain much more and regain confidence. You already learned Java and Python, so you have evidence that you can learn these technologies too.
You don’t necessarily have to ban AI forever, but change its role. Try solving a problem independently first, then use it only for hints, explanations, or reviewing code you already wrote. Read every generated line and verify it against the documentation. If you can’t explain a piece of code, don’t add it to your project yet. That turns AI into a tutor or review tool instead of the person doing the programming.
Make the AI unavailable for a while. Remove coding assistants and other AI tools from your editor, then choose one small part of the website and build it yourself. Start with basic HTML, use documentation such as MDN, and type the code manually. Don’t try to finish the whole site at once. Feeling stuck or slow at first is normal, and working through that difficulty is part of rebuilding your understanding.
