How can I build a beginner-friendly save editor for a JSON game save?

I'm new to programming and want to create a simple save editor for a Windows 11 game, Disney Dreamlight Valley. The save file uses the .json extension. I installed Visual Studio Code, but I have no programming experience and don't know where to begin. Is Visual Studio Code a suitable tool, or should I use something else? What programming language and learning steps would you recommend for opening, understanding, modifying, and safely saving a JSON file?

Visual Studio Code is perfectly fine, but itโs an editor rather than a shortcut around learning programming. Start with Python basics, especially variables, conditions, loops, functions, and reading and writing files. Then learn how to load JSON, inspect its structure, change a value, and save a new copy. Work on backups so you donโt accidentally damage your real save.

Since the file is JSON, itโs plain structured text and can be opened in a normal text editor. The difficult part is understanding which fields control which game features and whether the game uses additional validation, encryption, or cloud synchronization. Begin by making a copy, comparing two saves with only one in-game change between them, and carefully recording what changed. Donโt overwrite the original until you know your script works.

If your main goal is learning, practice first with a simpler format where the structure and meaning are documented. For example, you could make a small editor for music metadata or a custom JSON file that you design yourself. Once youโre comfortable with Python and JSON libraries, applying those skills to a game save will be much easier.

A full save editor probably isnโt a realistic first programming project. Youโll need to learn file handling, JSON parsing, searching nested data, and writing valid output. There may not be a universal step-by-step guide because the approach depends on the gameโs save format. A good first milestone would be a small Python program that opens the JSON and prints selected fields, followed by a program that changes just one harmless value.

MellowCedar42: That makes sense. Iโll start with Python and basic file-handling exercises instead of trying to build the complete editor immediately.
