How can I build a system that sorts animals by group and climate?

I have almost no programming experience, aside from making a small clicker game in Scratch a few years ago. I'd like to create a system that takes a large list of animals and organizes them into the six major groupsโinvertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Within those groups, I also want to classify each animal as living in a cold, warm, or hot environment, based on the average temperatures of its habitat. I'm wondering what tools or programming approach would make this manageable for a beginner. I tried organizing everything manually, but the list is too large, and I'd prefer to build the system myself rather than have an AI generate the classifications.

For a more advanced version, you could store the animals in a database such as PostgreSQL and add fields for classifications, habitats, and temperature ranges. A tool like Directus could provide an interface for editing and browsing the data without requiring you to build every screen from scratch. Graph or linked-data databases could also be useful if you want to represent relationships between animals, locations, habitats, and climate zones, but theyโre probably more complexity than you need at the beginning.

Thereโs no simple ready-made tool that will automatically handle all of this, because the project combines several separate tasks: collecting the animal data, assigning each animal to a biological group, finding habitat temperatures, defining what counts as cold, warm, or hot, and then displaying or searching the results. Start by breaking it into smaller pieces and build a basic version with only a few animals before trying to process a full list.

A spreadsheet would probably be the easiest place to begin. Give each animal columns for its name, biological group, habitat, average temperature, and climate category. Once you understand how the data should be organized, you could build a small program to read the spreadsheet and sort or filter the rows. A database and web app would work for a larger, shareable project, but that is a much bigger step and would require learning both database and web development.
