How can I completely remove the McAfee trial after resetting my laptop?

I factory-reset my school laptop, chose to erase everything, and used a cloud download because the local recovery option would not work. After the reset, I started seeing McAfee notifications. The app says it has a 30-day trial, even though I have never used McAfee, created an account, or provided payment information. I'm confused about why it appeared and want to remove it completely. If I uninstall it through Windows' Apps settings, could I still somehow be charged after the trial ends?

It was probably included as a manufacturer-installed trial when the laptop was restored to its factory software. If you never entered payment information, there generally isnโ€™t anything to bill. Uninstall McAfee through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, then restart the laptop. If anything remains, use McAfeeโ€™s official consumer removal utility.

The notifications can make it look more serious than it is, but simply seeing a trial does not mean McAfee has your payment details. If you did enter a card or sign up for an account at any point, check the accountโ€™s billing settings and cancel there too. Otherwise, uninstalling the application should be enough.

Since this is a school-issued computer, check the schoolโ€™s technology policy before removing security software. The school may manage or require certain programs, and tampering with the installation could cause problems. If the laptop belongs to you and is only used for schoolwork, uninstalling the trial is normally straightforward.

A factory reset that restores the manufacturer image can bring back bundled trial software, so this does not necessarily mean the laptop was infected. McAfeeโ€™s 30-day trial is not the same as an active paid subscription. Remove it from Add or remove programs and let Microsoft Defender handle protection afterward.
