How can I completely wipe Windows 11 Pro for Workstations and install Windows 11 Home?

My nephew's laptop currently has an unauthorized or expired copy of Windows 11 Pro for Workstations. I purchased a legitimate Windows 11 Home license that came with installation media, and I want to erase the existing installation completely. We do not need to preserve anything on the drive; his games can be downloaded again later. I previously tried entering the boot menu, deleting partitions, and reinstalling Windows, but the computer ended up back on Windows 11 Pro for Workstations, fully activated and updated. Setup never asked for my Home product key. How do I boot from the USB, remove every existing Windows partition, and make sure Windows 11 Home is installed instead?

Use a current, official Windows 11 installer on the USB and make sure the laptop meets Windows 11 requirements. After installation, enable Secure Boot and install the laptop manufacturerโ€™s drivers and Windows updates. Also verify that the license you bought is a full Windows 11 Home license rather than an upgrade-only product.

Boot directly from the Windows USB rather than starting Setup from the existing installation. In the firmware boot menu, select the USB deviceโ€”on many systems this is F12, Esc, or a similar key, not necessarily F10. When Windows Setup asks where to install, delete every partition on the internal drive until it shows only unallocated space. Be certain you have selected the correct drive, since this permanently erases it. Select the unallocated space and let Setup create the recommended partitions automatically.

MellowCactus47: That explains why the old installation remained. I was apparently reinstalling over it instead of booting the USB and deleting the drive during Setup.

The laptop probably has a Windows Pro product key embedded in its firmware. Windows Setup can read that key automatically and choose Pro, which is why it never asked for yours. The installer itself is not permanently tied to one edition. If Setup does not offer Windows 11 Home, disconnect the computer from the internet and look for an option such as โ€œI donโ€™t have a product keyโ€ or โ€œChoose an edition.โ€ Select Windows 11 Home, finish the installation, then enter the Home key under Settings > System > Activation. If the installer still automatically selects Pro, the official installation media may need an edition-selection configuration or a generic Home installation key during setup; use the purchased key for activation afterward.
