How can I convert a .mov video to .mpg on a Mac?

I need to submit an important video to a website that only accepts .mpg, .flv, or .avi files. My video is currently in .mov format on a Mac, and .mpg seems like the safest option. I've tried a few browser-based converters, but they either limit large files, have poor reviews, or charge a lot. Is there a free and reasonably simple way to convert the file on macOS?

It may be worth checking why the site requires such old formats. If it gives no codec guidance, try a short test export first before converting the entire large video, since some sites accept the extension but reject the actual encoding.

FFmpeg will handle this for free and works on macOS, but it’s command-line software and may be less beginner-friendly. Shutter Encoder and Avidemux are other free Mac applications with a graphical interface.

Yes, you can convert it on a Mac. HandBrake is probably the easiest free option with a graphical interface. Open the .mov file, choose an MPEG-compatible output setting, and export it. VLC can also convert files if you already have it installed.
