How can I customize my Linux Mint desktop with better widgets, themes, and fonts?

I recently bought a Lenovo V14 G2 with 16 GB of RAM and a 500 GB SSD for about $200, mainly to learn Linux and explore the IT field. I installed Linux Mint with Cinnamon, and the experience has been smooth so far. I've also started using terminal cheat sheets to become more comfortable with the command line. I'm interested in customizing the desktop with more attractive widgets, different colors and fonts, themed application icons, and possibly even animated GIF-style widgets. Cinnamon's built-in selection seems fairly limited, so where should I start looking for themes, extensions, customization tools, color codes, and font settings? I'm also curious whether many of the highly customized desktop setups use a different desktop environment or window manager, such as Hyprland.

A lot of the screenshots with elaborate layouts are using a different desktop environment or window manager rather than standard Cinnamon. Check what software each setup uses before trying to recreate it, because the instructions vary a lot between environments. Hyprland is popular for highly customized tiling desktops, but it requires more configuration and is a bigger learning curve than Cinnamon.

The best approach is to find a few tutorials or example configurations and then change things one piece at a time. Themes, extensions, icons, fonts, terminal color schemes, and launchers are usually configured separately. Also, don’t feel pressured to copy every elaborate setup you see—start with the parts you actually want and keep the system usable while you learn.
MellowCactus42: I definitely want to experiment and make it my own. I’ll probably figure out which changes are useful as I go instead of trying to install everything at once.

Cinnamon has downloadable themes, applets, desklets, and extensions that can make the desktop look much more customized. The official Cinnamon themes and extensions site is a good place to start. You can also change themes and appearance settings directly through Cinnamon’s system settings. For more advanced customization, look for tutorials specific to the version of Cinnamon you’re running and experiment gradually.

MellowCactus42: I’m starting to realize that many of the widgets and interface details I like are built around Hyprland, so I may look into it once I’m more comfortable with Linux.
