How can I diagnose and improve my new gaming PC’s slow performance?

I bought a custom-built gaming PC about a month ago with a Ryzen 7 9850X3D, RTX 5080, and 32 GB of RAM. This is my first gaming PC, and the system feels much slower than I expected. I'm not sure whether the problem is low game FPS, slow startup, general Windows responsiveness, or something else. My monitor is set to 144 Hz at its native resolution, and the HDMI cable is connected to the graphics card rather than the motherboard. What information and checks would help identify the issue and optimize the system?

Install HWiNFO64, run it in full mode, and use its summary report. Share details such as CPU and GPU temperatures, clock speeds, memory configuration, motherboard, storage drives, and whether the RAM is running at its rated speed. A benchmark such as 3DMark Steel Nomad can also provide a score to compare against similar hardware.

It would help to define what “slow” means first. Are games getting low FPS or stuttering, does Windows take a long time to start, or do apps respond slowly? Also provide your monitor model and resolution, the game and settings where you notice the issue, and whether the PC has a fresh Windows installation.

Check what kind of storage the system uses and how much free space remains on the Windows drive. An NVMe or SATA SSD should be used for the operating system rather than an old mechanical hard drive. If the previous owner’s installation is still on the PC, backing up anything important and performing a clean Windows installation may eliminate unwanted software and configuration problems.

Also install the current chipset and graphics drivers from the hardware manufacturers. In the BIOS, verify that the memory is running with EXPO enabled if the kit supports it, then check Windows and GPU power settings for an appropriate performance mode.

Make sure the CPU cooler is working properly and check temperatures while gaming. Overheating can reduce clock speeds and make a powerful system feel sluggish. HDMI is not automatically a problem; if it is connected to the graphics card and supports the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, DisplayPort is not required just for performance.
