How can I download JDK 5 when Oracle’s account signup fails?

I need to download JDK 5 or JRE 5 for a school assignment because the instructions specifically require that version. The archived download is hosted by Oracle, but I don't have an Oracle account. When I try to create one, the signup page fails with either error 428 or 403, so I can't access the download. What's the best way to proceed?

Be aware that very old Java versions can be unsafe and may not run properly on a modern operating system. If the assignment involves legacy software, using an isolated virtual machine may be safer than installing Java 5 directly on your main computer.

The signup errors may be caused by stale cookies or session data. Try opening the account page in a private window, clearing the site’s cookies, or using another browser and network. Also disable extensions that might interfere with the signup form.

JDK 5 has been officially obsolete for many years, so it may be difficult to obtain through the normal download process. Since your assignment specifically requires it, first confirm whether the instructor truly needs Java 5 or whether a newer JDK would work. If Java 5 is mandatory, ask the instructor or school whether they can provide an approved copy or installation package.

Some older systems genuinely still depend on Java applets, but they usually require a carefully preserved legacy environment. If this is for a class, the instructor should ideally provide a virtual machine or detailed setup instructions rather than expecting students to obtain an unsupported runtime from an archive.
