My voicemail is filled with silent messages and robocalls, and I've already blocked more than 250 numbers. Blocking calls individually isn't helping because new or spoofed numbers keep appearing, and sometimes legitimate callers are blocked by mistake. What practical steps can actually make this manageable without missing important calls?

Consider separating your important calls from your public-facing number. Keep the current number for websites, businesses, applications, and other places likely to share or expose it, while giving a new number only to close contacts, your bank, doctors, and other essential services. A virtual number with voicemail transcription can also act as a buffer. Changing your main number may help, but recycled numbers can have their own spam history, so screen the replacement immediately and avoid posting it online.
Don’t answer unknown calls, even to stay silent or argue with the caller. A live answer can confirm that your number reaches a person, which may increase its value to spammers. Let unknown callers leave voicemail, and return only messages that clearly identify a legitimate reason to call. Also reduce exposure by removing your number from data-broker listings where possible and avoid entering it on unnecessary websites. There’s no perfect way to eliminate spoofed calls, but combining screening, carrier filtering, and better number privacy usually cuts them down substantially.
A phone with strong automated call screening can make a huge difference. Certain Android phones can answer unknown calls, ask what the caller wants, and only ring you if the response seems legitimate. iPhones and other Android devices also have options to silence or screen unknown callers. This is usually more effective than manually blocking numbers because scammers constantly change or spoof the number they display.
Stop blocking numbers one at a time and enable your carrier’s spam protection plus your phone’s built-in call screening. Many newer phones can automatically identify spam, ask unknown callers to state their business, or send unrecognized calls straight to voicemail. Legitimate offices can usually leave a message or identify themselves through the screening prompt. Be careful with rules that block every number outside your contacts if you’re applying for jobs or expecting calls.
Some phones also let you temporarily turn unknown-call screening off when you’re expecting a delivery, doctor, or job-related call, then turn it back on afterward.
Changing numbers is inconvenient because they’re tied to countless accounts, so treating the existing number as a public inbox and protecting a second number may be less disruptive.
