How can I explore different areas of computer science before choosing a specialization?

I'm a second-year computer science student on summer break. I already know C++ and Python, but I want to learn more about the different areas of computer science before deciding what to specialize in. What topics or projects would be good for exploring the field and figuring out what I enjoy?

Computer science is broad, so try a few areas instead of committing immediately. Small projects in web development, databases, operating systems, networking, cybersecurity, and AI or machine learning can give you a feel for what you enjoy. Youโll probably discover your direction by building things rather than just reading about each field.

Backend development is a useful area to explore because it introduces databases, APIs, networking, authentication, and system design. Try to understand the underlying concepts instead of tying yourself to one framework. You can also watch short introductions to several technology stacks, then go deeper into whichever one keeps your interest.

Start with something youโd actually like to exist, then work backward and build the smallest useful version. That approach is usually better than choosing a programming language or watching tutorials without making anything. The basic ideasโloops, functions, data structures, and problem-solvingโwill transfer between languages and specialties.
