How can I factory-reset my Lenovo laptop without losing Windows activation?

I have an older Lenovo Yoga 6 with a Ryzen 7 4700U and 16 GB of RAM. It has become extremely slow and starts getting hot and laggy even when I'm only watching YouTube. I'm willing to start over with a clean Windows installation, but I want to make sure I don't lose the Windows license it originally came with. I've upgraded to Windows 11 and would like to know the safest way to reset or reinstall it from scratch.

You should be able to reinstall Windows 11 without entering a product key. The laptopโ€™s activation is usually stored as a digital license linked to its hardware, and many Lenovo systems also have an OEM key stored in the firmware. When the installer asks for a key, choose โ€œI donโ€™t have a product key,โ€ install the same edition of Windows, and it should reactivate automatically after connecting to the internet.

Before reinstalling, check whether your current Windows installation is activated and note whether itโ€™s Home or Pro. You can also use a reputable key-information utility to record the license details, but normally you wonโ€™t need them for a reinstall on the same laptop. Back up your files first because a clean installation will erase the drive.

The laptop may also be slowed down by unnecessary startup programs or background software. You could first try Windowsโ€™ built-in reset option and select the choice to remove everything, or create official Windows installation media for a completely clean setup. If it still overheats and performs poorly afterward, the problem probably isnโ€™t Windows alone.

A clean install may help, but overheating while playing YouTube suggests a hardware or cooling problem too. Check whether the vents are blocked, make sure the fans are spinning, and gently clear dust from the vents with compressed air. If temperatures remain high, the laptop may need internal cleaning or fresh thermal paste. Heat can make the processor throttle, which causes the lag youโ€™re noticing.
