How Can I Figure Out If My Monitors Are Wobbling Due to My Desk or the Monitor Arm?

I recently got a new monitor arm, but I've noticed that my monitors wobble whenever I type on the keyboard or move the mouse. Some friends have suggested it's the desk that's moving rather than the arm being faulty. How can I verify the cause? It confuses me because when I shake an empty Coca-Cola bottle on the table, it stays put, but my monitors, which are heavier, don't. Is there some physics behind this, or could the arm actually be to blame?

It could be a desk issue, especially if you have a standard 4-leg setup, which can be pretty unstable. Even a sturdy monitor stand can shake if you type hard. It's all about the physics of leverage. The longer the arm, the more pronounced the wobble. A sturdier desk might help with the problem.

The wobbling is likely due to how monitor arms amplify any vibrations from your desk. If your desk isn't very stable, it can worsen the issue. Monitor arms, especially ones with springs, can make vibrations more noticeable. So, if your desk is shaky, that's probably where the problem lies.

It sounds like momentum is playing a big role too. Even a solid desk can transfer vibrations, especially with a big monitor attached to a small hinge. If you're looking for solutions, a desk mount that sits directly on the surface might help. It could provide better stability compared to clamps.
