My desktop suddenly started showing a "USB device over current status detected" message. I disconnected the front-panel USB headers, keyboard, mouse, rear USB accessories, fans, and even removed the CMOS battery for several minutes, but the error remains. The computer only has the DisplayPort cable and power connected now. What else can I check to find the short or fix the problem?

Inspect every USB port closely, especially the ones you use most. A bent contact, conductive dust, or liquid residue can short the port. Also disconnect any internal USB-connected accessories, such as fan or ARGB controllers, not just the front-panel ports.
Fans usually aren’t involved unless a fan hub or controller has an internal USB connection. Unplug every accessory from the rear ports as well, then check inside each port for anything metallic or out of place.
If the warning stays after removing all USB devices, shut the system down, unplug the power supply, and hold the power button for a few seconds to drain residual power before testing again. If the hardware checks out, look for a BIOS or motherboard firmware update using the exact board model. A failing motherboard USB hub or, less commonly, an unstable power supply could also cause this. Replacing a faulty PSU resolved a similar issue for me.
I’ll check whether there’s a firmware update for the motherboard and test the power supply if inspecting the ports doesn’t reveal anything.
