I'm putting together a new AM5 system and need at least 32GB of DDR5 memory. Ideally, I'd buy a 2x16GB kit rated around 6000 MT/s with CL30 timings, but prices in my area are approaching €400–500. That would consume roughly 30% of my entire build budget. Are there sensible compromises, such as lower speeds, looser timings, buying used, or choosing a smaller capacity, that would bring the cost down without causing major performance problems?

If this is mainly a gaming system, 2x8GB could be a temporary option for many games, provided you don’t run lots of background applications. However, 16GB is becoming less comfortable, and upgrading later may be more expensive or inconvenient. A cheaper 2x16GB kit with lower-rated speeds is probably the better long-term compromise if you can find one at a reasonable price.
Check the used market, but keep expectations realistic. Some sellers may offer a modest discount, though many know exactly how expensive DDR5 is and price their kits accordingly. Make sure the kit is a matched pair, verify its capacity and specifications, and test it promptly after purchase.
Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a reliable workaround if you need the memory right now. DDR5, graphics cards, and SSDs have all become unusually expensive, so waiting for a dramatic price drop may not help. Compare several retailers and consider buying a reputable kit with slightly lower speeds or looser timings rather than paying a huge premium for 6000 CL30.
That’s what I was afraid of. It’s hard to justify spending that much on memory when it takes such a large share of the whole build.
