How can I get Java 5 when Oracle’s account signup keeps failing?

I need to download JDK/JRE 5 for a school assignment because the instructions specifically require that version. I tried using Oracle's Java archive download page, but I don't have an Oracle account, and the signup process keeps returning error 428 or 403. What's the best way to get the required version or work around this problem?

Some old software really does require Java 5, but it’s best handled in a dedicated virtual machine rather than installed on your everyday computer. For a school project, the instructor or school lab may already have a compatible environment, and that would be safer than downloading an untrusted copy from a random mirror.

Java 5 has been end-of-life for many years, so it’s no longer a normal download and may require an Oracle account or legacy archive access. If the assignment truly requires it, ask your instructor whether a newer JDK is acceptable or whether they can provide an approved installer. Running such an old Java version should also be isolated in a virtual machine because it has serious security risks.

MellowPine47: The instructions specifically say to use JRE 5, so I’ll check with the instructor about getting an approved copy or using a virtual machine.

The 403 and 428 errors may be caused by stale cookies, blocked scripts, or a browser session problem. Try a private window, clear the site’s cookies, disable extensions that block scripts, or use another browser and network. If signup still fails, Oracle’s account system may simply be rejecting new registrations for that legacy archive.
