I'm setting up Linux with two monitors, but the second display isn't being detected. The monitor connections and cables are working, and I'm probably using GNOME, although I'm not completely sure. I also realized afterward that I hadn't installed the proper drivers for my graphics card, which may have been the cause. What information should I check, and what steps should I follow to configure the second monitor?

Make sure the cable is connected to a port on the graphics card rather than the motherboard. If your card has only one HDMI port, the other outputs are probably DisplayPort, so you may need a DisplayPort cable or a suitable active adapter. After installing the graphics drivers, the monitor should normally appear automatically.
In most Linux desktop environments, a second monitor should work as soon as it’s connected to the graphics card. Open the system Settings and look for Displays or Display Configuration, then choose whether to extend, mirror, or arrange the screens. If it isn’t listed there, the graphics driver is the first thing to check.
The distribution, desktop environment, graphics card, connection type, and whether you’re using X11 or Wayland all matter here. GNOME’s desktop version can usually be found in Settings under About, while the distribution and version are often shown there too. Once the correct GPU driver is installed, reboot and check the Displays panel again.
