I've studied IT, and Rust is my favorite programming language. I also know Java, JavaScript, and Python. I currently work as an IT teacher for children, so my day-to-day programming work is fairly simple, but I've always wanted to contribute to open-source software. I regularly use projects such as Ghostty, Neovim, Zen, Arch, and other free and open-source tools, yet contributing feels much more intimidating and complicated than anything I've learned so far. I'm also concerned that maintainers may already be overwhelmed by AI-generated pull requests, so I don't want to waste anyone's time with low-quality contributions. What's a sensible way to begin?

Start with a project you already use and understand from a user’s perspective. Read its README and CONTRIBUTING.md, look through the issue tracker, and learn how the project builds, tests, and reviews changes. Small documentation fixes, typo corrections, or clearly scoped bug fixes are good ways to become familiar with the workflow.
Don’t assume every project is overwhelmed by AI-generated pull requests. Check the issue discussions and contribution guidelines to see what maintainers actually need. Communicate clearly, keep the change focused, explain what you tested, and avoid proposing a large redesign before you understand the existing codebase.
Very small contributions are completely fine as a first step. Fix a confusing sentence, improve an example, reproduce a bug, or add useful details such as your operating system, version, and exact steps to reproduce a problem. These reports and improvements save maintainers time and help you learn the project before touching complex code.
You can also practice by creating a small project of your own. Set up formatting, linting, tests, builds, releases, and documentation so you understand the maintenance work behind an open-source project. That experience makes it much easier to contribute respectfully to someone else’s code.

Exactly—bug reproduction and issue triage can be just as valuable as writing code, especially for projects with lots of platforms and configurations.
