I've been unemployed for about four months. I have roughly two years of software development experience, but despite applying, contacting recruiters, improving my résumé, and trying different approaches, I haven't been able to land another role. I recently considered contributing to open-source projects, although that isn't really my strength. I'm also thinking about building a SaaS product to generate income, but I have no idea how to find a worthwhile idea or convince people to pay for it. Building the software itself feels like the easiest part. What would be the most practical way to start earning while continuing my job search?

If you need income quickly, don’t start by building a SaaS product and hoping customers appear. Try freelance marketplaces or local contract work first, where clients already have problems they’re willing to pay someone to solve. Small projects can bring in cash, testimonials, and a better understanding of what businesses actually need.
Find customers before writing the product. Talk to potential clients, ask what repetitive or expensive problem they need solved, and offer to build a small version for them. That way you get feedback and possibly payment before spending weeks creating another project nobody wants. You can also use your existing development experience to sell freelance work while validating a product idea.
