I want to hear my own voice through my headset while speaking, mainly so I can keep my volume down at night. Windows' built-in "Listen to this device" option works, but it introduces a noticeable delay that makes my voice sound like a recording. I remember using a setting years ago that let me hear myself clearly and almost instantly. What is that feature called, and where can I enable it?

The feature you’re looking for is called sidetone, also known as mic monitoring. It’s usually available in your headset, sound card, or microphone’s own software and lets you hear your voice with little or no latency.
The Windows option is under Sound settings: open the Recording tab, select your microphone, choose Properties, then open Listen and enable “Listen to this device.” However, that method often has noticeable latency. For delay-free monitoring, use the sidetone or direct-monitoring control provided by the headset or audio device instead.
