I'm a Windows Systems Administrator with 2 years and 8 months of experience, and I've been unemployed for about two months. I received several interview calls in May and June, but since July they have almost completely stopped. I've attended around 10 interviews. Some interviewers wanted very specific, highly detailed answers, and in one case I reached the final HR round after travelling 15 hours for an in-person interview, only to be told that the role required at least three years of experience for its P2 level. Other companies have counted my experience as roughly three years.
My hands-on experience includes Windows Server, Active Directory, VMware, Citrix, SCCM/MECM, WSUS, PowerShell, and Azure. My day-to-day work has involved patching, vulnerability remediation, OS hardening, commissioning and decommissioning virtual machines, resolving user access and server issues, and writing PowerShell scripts to automate routine tasks.
I'd appreciate practical advice on what someone with nearly three years of Windows administration experience should be strong in, how to improve fundamentals and troubleshooting, whether the current slowdown in systems administration hiring is normal, and which months tend to be busiest for infrastructure hiring in India. I'm also considering whether to continue pursuing Windows administration roles or use this period to move toward Azure, cloud, or DevOps. I want to build genuine skills rather than simply memorize interview answers.

I wouldn’t abandon systems administration solely because hiring is slow. Strengthen the Windows and infrastructure base while adding one direction that employers commonly value, such as Azure administration, identity, automation, or cloud operations. PowerShell, networking, security fundamentals, and clear incident documentation are especially useful. Hiring patterns vary by company and budget cycle, so there may be busier periods in India, but it’s better to keep applying continuously than wait for a specific month.
Be precise about what you mean by each technology. Interviewers will usually want to hear about the work you performed, not just a list of products. Be ready to explain a complete troubleshooting process: how you gathered symptoms, checked logs and monitoring, isolated the cause, tested a fix, handled rollback, and documented the result. For your background, prepare detailed examples involving AD authentication and replication, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, permissions, Windows performance, patch failures, VMware issues, and PowerShell automation.
The market is definitely difficult right now, and even people with several years of experience may wait months for a suitable offer. That said, nearly three years is still early-career experience, so target junior or lower-mid-level Windows, infrastructure, support escalation, and operations roles rather than assuming every P2 position is appropriate. Keep applying broadly, and don’t interpret a slow response as proof that your career is going in the wrong direction.
That makes sense. My main difficulty is finding enough junior infrastructure openings, so I’ll broaden the roles I target while continuing to build my skills.
A home lab would be a useful way to strengthen fundamentals and create better interview examples. Build a small environment with Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, Group Policy, a few client machines, and virtualization. Practice common failure scenarios such as broken name resolution, locked accounts, replication problems, expired certificates, failed patches, and incorrect permissions. Document what you tried and why; those notes can also help you answer interviews naturally instead of memorizing scripts.
You can extend that lab toward Azure by learning Entra ID, hybrid identity, Azure networking, monitoring, backup, and basic infrastructure automation. That gives you a gradual transition from Windows administration rather than requiring a complete domain change.
