I'm a third-year IT student and want to become better at coding and logical problem-solving. Following my faculty's advice, I started practicing programming challenges, but I struggle even with problems that are considered basic. What would be a better way to build my skills and gain confidence?

Programming challenge sites can be pretty difficult as a starting point. Try something more guided, such as Exercism, where you can practice smaller exercises and sometimes receive feedback on your code. Before writing anything, analyze the problem away from the keyboard: break it into smaller steps, write pseudocode or a flowchart, and think through a few examples by hand. Then implement and test each part.

The guided feedback is especially useful early on. Writing the solution on paper first also helps prevent getting stuck staring at a blank editor.

If your goal is stronger logical reasoning, studying discrete mathematics and basic logic can help. The important part is consistent practice: try a problem yourself, identify exactly where you get stuck, study the missing concept, and then attempt it again rather than immediately looking at a complete solution.

Challenge platforms are useful for interview-style practice, but they are not a complete measure of programming ability. A person can struggle with puzzle problems and still become a capable developer, so balance them with coursework, small applications, and practical debugging.

A structured course, tutor, or study group may be a better fit if you are unsure which fundamentals you are missing. Try to focus on understanding concepts and asking, “How could I solve this?” instead of memorizing the expected method. It is normal for this to feel difficult, and progress usually comes from regular practice over time.

Make sure you understand the fundamentals before focusing heavily on algorithm puzzles. Practice variables, conditionals, loops, functions, arrays, objects, debugging, and basic data structures. Building small projects that interest you can make those concepts easier to remember and show you how programming is used in practice.
