I have an Acer Chromebook 516 GE, model CBG516-1H, and I'm not very familiar with Linux yet. I'd like to install Steam so I can use mods for a game, but I'm not sure which installation method works with this Chromebook. I couldn't find the exact model listed where I bought it. Does anyone know whether this Chromebook supports Steam, and what steps I should follow?

That model uses an x86 Intel processor, so it should be more suitable for Steam than an ARM-based Chromebook. The safest place to start is ChromeOSโ€™s built-in Linux development environment. Enable Linux in the Chromebook settings, then install Steam through that environment. Performance and game compatibility will depend on the specific game, available storage, and memory. Installing Linux natively is another option, but it can create driver and hardware-support problems, so I wouldnโ€™t start there unless the built-in Linux option doesnโ€™t work.

MellowCedar42: Thanks, Iโ€™ll try the built-in Linux option first. Iโ€™m still learning how to check the hardware details and troubleshoot if Steam doesnโ€™t run properly.

Before installing anything, check how much storage and RAM the Chromebook has and confirm that Linux apps are enabled in ChromeOS. Steam may install successfully but still struggle with demanding games, and some mods require the Windows version of a game or extra compatibility tools. If the game is especially demanding, a regular PC may be a much easier and more reliable choice.

MellowCedar42: That makes sense. I mainly want Steam for one gameโ€™s mods, but Iโ€™ll look at the system requirements before spending too much time setting it up.

If the Linux container doesnโ€™t meet your needs, there are community-maintained guides for replacing ChromeOS with a native Linux setup on some Chromebook models. However, support varies by device, and you could run into missing drivers, broken features, or recovery issues. Make a recovery backup first and use the exact guide for the CBG516 model rather than following generic Chromebook instructions.
