For most of my life, I followed computer science because I enjoyed the puzzles and the satisfaction of solving problems. Lately, though, AI tools have made it much harder to stay engaged. When I run into a bug or repetitive boilerplate, it is incredibly easy to press a button and let AI handle it, but then I mentally check out of the work. I appreciate the productivity boost, yet it feels like it has removed much of the motivation I originally had for programming.
Avoiding AI entirely is one option, but computer science is one of my most realistic career paths, and my coworkers can complete tasks much faster with AI assistance. I do not want to end up resenting my work or feeling unfulfilled, so I am looking for practical workflows that preserve the interesting problem-solving parts while still using AI where it makes sense. How do you stay challenged and engaged?

A useful compromise is to build the important or central parts yourself and hand off the low-value chores to AI. For example, if the interesting part is designing the data flow, do that manually, then let AI help with routine parsing, formatting, or repetitive glue code. AI can also be useful as a debugging partner after you have already investigated the problem yourself.
There probably is not a workflow that provides all the speed of having AI do the work while also giving you the satisfaction of doing the work yourself. If your coworkers are moving faster, you may need to accept some tradeoff: use AI strategically for productivity, but reserve certain projects or parts of each task for deliberate, hands-on practice.
It may help to treat AI as a tool you consult rather than an automatic implementation button. Set a rule that you first write down your hypothesis, sketch a solution, or attempt the bug fix before asking for help. That preserves the reasoning process while still letting AI unblock you when you are genuinely stuck.
Try separating tasks by urgency. For work that needs to be finished immediately, use AI to move quickly. For tasks with a more flexible deadline, write the solution yourself as a deliberate challenge. That gives you room to keep practicing and enjoying the problem-solving side without ignoring workplace expectations.

That is the difficult part for me. My coworkers enjoy using AI and are faster with it, while I feel less satisfied even when I finish the same kind of work. I may need to be more intentional about choosing which parts I keep for myself instead of expecting the whole process to feel the way it used to.
