How Can I Locate My Business’s IP Cameras and Recover Footage?

I have several IP cameras installed at my business and need to access recorded footage, but I cannot currently reach the system. The cameras receive power from a PoE switch and appear to be connected to a DVR/NVR, but connecting a spare monitor produces no signal. I also tried scanning the network and checking the router's connected-device list, but I cannot find the recorder or camera IP addresses. The system was installed about seven years ago, and I am still waiting to hear from the person who originally set it up. What is the safest way to identify the recorder and cameras without risking the footage?

Many recorder systems assign cameras addresses on their own range, sometimes using a private 172.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x subnet. That explains why the router list and a scan of the regular network show nothing. The recorder’s model and manual should indicate how to view or change the camera network settings.

Before assuming the cameras are offline, troubleshoot the recorder itself. Confirm that the monitor is connected to the correct video output, try another cable or display, and power-cycle the recorder. If the recorder does not boot or display anything locally, its power supply, storage, or video output may have failed.

I’m mainly trying to recover existing footage, so I don’t want to reset anything until I know the recordings are safely backed up.

Start by connecting a laptop directly to the same network segment as the recorder, preferably to the recorder’s LAN connection or the PoE switch. The cameras may be on a separate private subnet, so a scan of the normal business network might not show them. A packet capture with Wireshark or a network scanner can reveal traffic and IP addresses, but you may need to configure your laptop with an address in the suspected subnet first.

The camera network may be isolated behind the recorder rather than connected directly to the router. Check both the recorder’s LAN port and the internal PoE network if it has separate interfaces.

Do not factory-reset the recorder yet. A reset could erase configuration or make the existing footage harder to access. Identify the manufacturer and exact model, check the original documentation, and determine whether the cameras were paired to that specific recorder. If the footage is important, a security-camera technician may be safer than replacing the system or building a new server first.
