I'm watching Drive (2011) from a DVD using my computer's internal disc drive and the picture looks noticeably blurry in VLC. DVDs I play locally have the same issue, while streamed video looks clear. Is the blur caused by the disc or by the lower resolution being enlarged to fit my monitor? Is there a way to improve the sharpness?

Check the video information in VLC and compare the DVD’s resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and interlacing with the streamed version. The stream may simply be a higher-resolution transfer. VLC’s automatic deinterlacing is usually fine, but you can test other deinterlacing modes if the image has comb-like artifacts. For higher-quality upscaling, another player configured with a renderer such as madVR may produce better results than VLC.
VLC has a sharpening filter under Tools > Effects and Filters > Video Effects > Sharpen. Adjust it gradually, since too much sharpening can create halos and make compression artifacts more obvious. It can improve the appearance, but it can’t restore detail that isn’t present on the DVD.
If it’s a standard DVD, the main limitation is the source resolution: DVD video is usually 480p, so it has to be scaled up on a 1080p or higher monitor. Try right-clicking the video and disabling “Fit to screen” so it displays closer to its native size. It will be smaller, but often looks less blurry.
