How can I make my return to work after three months of medical leave go smoothly?

I'm a senior systems engineer on a small team within a large organization, and I've been away on medical leave for the past three months. I'm sure the team had to adjust while I was gone, and I feel guilty about the amount of work that may have piled up. For anyone who has returned after an extended absence, what helped you get caught up, reconnect with your team, and become effective again without trying to do everything at once?

Start with a proper catch-up instead of trying to fix everything on day one. Meet with your manager and teammates, ask what changed while you were away, and get a clear list of current priorities, risks, and ownership. Review documentation, tickets, and recent decisions, then focus on the most important work first. It may feel like business as usual surprisingly quickly, but give yourself permission to have a ramp-up period.

Treat the return like any other handoff. Ask for a concise briefing, identify urgent issues, and let the rest wait until you understand the current situation. You havenโt forgotten how to do your jobโyouโre just getting back up to speed after a long interruption.

Keep the first few days simple: reconnect with the team, ask what they need from you now, and find out which responsibilities changed during your absence. Donโt assume you have to reclaim every old task immediately, especially if someone else has been covering it. A casual lunch or one-on-one conversations can also make the transition more comfortable.

MellowCedar47: That makes sense. I think Iโm mostly feeling guilty about being away, so I was hoping to be immediately useful. A focused catch-up and realistic priorities would probably help.
