How can I make this 19-year-old Acer laptop more usable?

I found an old Acer TravelMate 7720 that had been sitting unused and managed to get it running. I installed the 32-bit Xfce edition of MX Linux and replaced the original hard drive with a 256 GB KingSpec SATA SSD. The SSD helped somewhat, but the laptop is still quite slow. Are there any worthwhile upgrades or configuration changes—such as adding RAM, replacing the CPU, or using different software—that could make it more efficient for basic tasks?

The SSD was a sensible upgrade for boot and application loading, but it cannot overcome the laptop's processor and memory limits. Keep the lightweight desktop, disable unnecessary startup services, and use simple applications where possible. For regular web browsing, video, or modern websites, a newer used laptop with at least 4–8 GB of RAM will be a much better value than putting more money into this one.

The biggest limitation is probably the hardware rather than the operating system. These laptops commonly have an older single-core or early dual-core processor and only support around 4 GB of DDR2 RAM. A lightweight Linux desktop can help, but modern web browsing will still be difficult, especially with a 32-bit system and today's browser requirements.

Realistically, there may not be much more worth upgrading. If it only has 2 GB of DDR2 RAM, that alone will make current software struggle, and the maximum supported memory may be limited. It could still serve as a basic offline machine, text editor, or simple file server, but replacing it with a newer used computer would make a much larger difference than further upgrades.

Check the exact CPU, chipset, and memory configuration first. Some versions have socketed processors and may accept a used Core 2 Duo, while others are much more limited. If the machine supports it, increasing the RAM and installing a compatible second-hand CPU could provide a small improvement, but only if the parts are very inexpensive and easy to find.
