I'm repairing an older Windows computer that currently boots from a 500 GB hard drive used as the C: drive. I added a second 500 GB hard drive, currently assigned as D:, and have been storing most of my files there. I'd like to switch their roles so Windows runs from the second drive and the original drive is used for data. What's the safest way to do this, and should I reinstall Windows or clone the existing installation?

You can clone the entire old system drive to the other HDD with a disk-cloning tool such as Clonezilla or another migration utility. Back up the destination drive first because cloning will normally erase it, and you may need to expand the Windows partition afterward. This preserves your programs and settings, but it’s more technical and has more opportunities for mistakes than reinstalling Windows.
Before deciding, compare the actual specifications of both drives. If they’re both mechanical hard drives, moving Windows from one to the other may not make a noticeable difference. A small SSD would provide a much larger speed improvement for the operating system, while the HDDs could be used for bulk storage.
The safest approach is to back up your important files, disconnect the old drive, and perform a fresh Windows installation on the drive you want to use for the operating system. After confirming that it boots correctly, reconnect the old drive, copy anything you still need, and reformat it for storage. Make sure you verify which physical drive is which before deleting anything.
A clean installation also avoids carrying over years of accumulated updates and unwanted software, so it’s usually preferable if the existing Windows setup is already sluggish.
