How Can I Overcome Programming Burnout and Manage My Projects Effectively?

I'm 18 and about to start college for computer science. I'm really passionate about coding and have learned a ton of languages like C#, C++, Java, Python, and more. Although I work part-time in the IT industry, I feel like I haven't showcased my skills enough through tangible work. I've been trying to build my portfolio, especially this summer, but I hit a wall after starting multiple projects without finishing any. Recently, I haven't coded in two weeks, opting instead for crochet to relieve some pressure. I have a few unfinished projects, including a portfolio website I've been working on since last December. I'm looking for advice on managing my projects and overcoming this burnout. I want to finish at least one of these projects by the end of summer!

Focus on one project at a time, and set a deadline! Getting caught up in planning can keep you stuck forever. It's better to finish something that might not be perfect than to have a bunch of unfinished projects. And maybe try to limit the languages you’re learning at once?

Yeah, that makes sense. I learned multiple languages from various classes but want to focus on what's most relevant to my projects.

Start with the basics: get your portfolio site up and running. It's all about showcasing your projects to motivate you to finish them! Also, don't be afraid to tackle smaller projects while chipping away at the larger ones. You’ve got this!

Are you really looking for advice or just venting? It seems like you know what you need to do but are feeling stuck. Overthinking can definitely hinder progress.

It’s frustrating! I want to finish something but find myself putting it off because I’m burned out and worried about not being good enough.

You've got to embrace the cycles of coding! After two decades in the business, I've learned that the fear of picking the wrong direction can really stall your progress. Just dive in and deliver something - even if it's not perfect. You can always refactor later. Plus, balancing hobbies like crochet is key to preventing burnout, so keep it up!

I totally relate! I had a project almost done, but then I got tangled in redesigning it. Sometimes I think about the purpose of the site too much and lose sight of finishing.

It's totally okay to take breaks! Life isn't a sprint. If you struggle to balance your projects, consider finding a mentor. They can help guide you and hold you accountable.

Remember, you’re ahead of many classmates! Just a few tips: keep your portfolio simple and don’t overthink every detail. Complete one project before jumping to the next, and always take breaks to avoid burnout.
