How can I prepare for a Java data structures course in just four weeks?

My previous school taught introductory programming in Python, but the program I'm transferring into teaches data structures in Java and expects students to have completed two semesters of Java. I only have about four weeks to prepare. I'm not especially worried about the underlying conceptsโ€”linked lists, trees, recursion, and similar structures work the same way conceptually. My concern is losing time to Java syntax, type declarations, and standard-library conventions while my classmates are already focused on algorithm analysis and Big-O. People keep telling me to build projects, which seems somewhat useful, but I'm looking for a more structured preparation plan. What should I prioritize during these four weeks?

A good plan is to take assignments or exercises you already completed in Python and recreate them in Java. You already understand the solution, so your attention can stay on syntax, types, class structure, and the Java API. After that, work through beginner algorithm problems involving arrays, strings, linked lists, stacks, queues, and trees. Write everything from scratch at first rather than relying heavily on library shortcuts.

Donโ€™t assume that students who sound confident necessarily have a strong grasp of Big-O. Your Python background should transfer well because the important ideas are language-independent. Java syntax is close enough to other mainstream languages that consistent practice will cover most of the gap. Use documentation or a coding assistant to clarify syntax, but make sure you can explain and reproduce the code yourself instead of blindly copying it.

Try to obtain the syllabus or course materials for the first two Java semesters and use them to make a checklist. Spend the first week on Java fundamentals, then spend the remaining time implementing data structures and solving small problems in Java. For every exercise, explain the runtime and memory complexity afterward. That will connect the language practice to the analysis youโ€™ll need in the course.

Four weeks is tight, but itโ€™s realistic if you focus on the kind of Java youโ€™ll actually use in class instead of trying to master the entire language. Practice writing classes, constructors, methods, arrays, generics, interfaces, and basic exception handling. Also learn the common collections and their operations, since knowing when to use ArrayList, LinkedList, HashMap, HashSet, stacks, and queues may matter more than obscure syntax. Reimplement a few standard data structures yourself so you can get comfortable with Java while reviewing the concepts.
