I earned the Azure Fundamentals certification about two and a half years ago, but I haven't used Azure since then. After being unemployed for more than a year, I've reached a second-round interview with a large consulting firm, and it's happening in less than 48 hours. The role involves Azure and AI alongside data engineering, machine learning, governance, data pipelines, Databricks, Snowflake, Python, SQL, and cloud-based business solutions. I have more than 15 years of experience in the relevant technical specialty, but my hands-on Azure knowledge is limited and rusty. What should I prioritize besides panicking?

Be direct about your level of Azure experience. Don’t pretend the certification represents years of hands-on work, but don’t undersell your strengths either. Explain that your Azure knowledge is foundational and rusty, while your domain expertise, leadership, data, AI, and problem-solving experience are strong. Interviewers usually care about how you reason through unfamiliar technology and how quickly you learn. Spend some time researching the firm and prepare a concise story about why this role is a good fit.
Read the job description as a roadmap. This sounds broader than an Azure administration interview: they may care about how you design data pipelines, data lakes, governance, AI workflows, analytics platforms, and scalable solutions across cloud environments. Prepare a few clear examples from your specialty experience and explain how you would approach them using Azure services. Be ready to discuss tradeoffs, security, data quality, monitoring, cost, and how you would move from a business problem to a production solution.
Focus on refreshing the core concepts instead of trying to become an Azure expert overnight. Review the AZ-900 material, especially subscriptions, resource groups, regions, identity and access, storage, compute, networking, security, governance, and basic pricing. An AZ-104 review can help you understand how those services are actually used. A fast exam-cram course or Microsoft Learn modules should be enough to reconnect the concepts. If possible, deploy one or two simple resources in Azure so you can talk about the experience practically.
You could also work through selected sections of a beginner Azure book or Microsoft Learn’s introductory AI material. Prioritize the areas most likely to connect Azure services with data platforms, machine learning, and generative AI rather than trying to cover every service.
That’s fair. I’m very strong in the technical specialty the role supports, with more than 15 years of experience, so I’ll emphasize that while being honest that Azure is an area I’m actively rebuilding.
