I'm looking to buy an older model iPhone, specifically the SE 3, but the Apple Store only lists the iPhone 16 and 17 for sale, with earlier models available only as refurbished. Last year, I had a SE 2 that needed repairs and the Apple support team offered to sell me one they had in stock, which makes me wonder if they might have some SE 3s available now. I prefer to buy directly from Apple instead of taking the refurbished route due to bad experiences in the past. Is there a way to get older models like the SE directly from Apple?

Apple’s refurbished stock changes all the time. There are websites out there that can alert you when the specific model you want comes back in stock, so that might be helpful to check out.
Unfortunately, if Apple isn’t listing a model on their site, it’s pretty much off the table for direct purchase. They do sometimes have older models in stock, but it’s hit or miss. Have you checked out eBay? You can find new, sealed 3rd Gen SEs there for around $250. That could be a good alternative if you’re concerned about buying refurbished phones. Just an idea!
I didn’t realize that sealed ones were available on eBay! I’ve been unsure about buying from there because of refurbished listings, but maybe that is worth looking into.
Just a heads up: Apple typically does not sell models they no longer offer support for through AppleCare, so that's another thing to consider when looking for older phones.
Apple’s inventory for older models is pretty limited. If you don’t see the model you want, it means it’s not available directly from them. Keep an eye on eBay or similar sites for good deals on what you’re after!

But they offered me a replacement SE 2 before, so they must stock them sometimes.
