I bought a new laptop for school and signed into it with the same Microsoft account I use on my desktop. The laptop then synced my desktop items, including shortcuts, photos, and documents. I tried removing those items from the laptop, but they also disappeared from my main desktop. Some files may have been the only copies of important photos and documents. How can I recover them and prevent the two computers from syncing the same Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders in the future?

To keep the computers separate, use different Windows or Microsoft accounts, or disable OneDrive folder backup on the school laptop. In OneDrive settings, review which folders are being backed up and unlink the laptop before moving or deleting anything. Sync is designed to mirror changes, so deleting a synchronized file on one device can remove it from the other devices too.
If the deleted items were only desktop shortcuts, the actual games and programs may still be installed; search for them from the Start menu or check their original installation folders. For documents and photos, check OneDrive’s recycle bin and version history before attempting recovery. You can also try a previous restore point, although it may not restore personal files and is not a substitute for file recovery.
Signing in by itself usually does not delete local files, but OneDrive may have redirected and synchronized your Desktop, Documents, or Pictures folders. Stop changing or deleting files for now, and do not empty the Recycle Bin. Check the Recycle Bin on both computers, OneDrive online, and File Explorer under C:Users for another Windows profile. Look inside that profile’s Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders as well. If the files are not there, stop using the desktop as much as possible and try a reputable file-recovery tool or professional recovery service.

I thought removing something from the laptop would only remove it from that computer. I was mainly deleting game shortcuts, but some photos and documents disappeared too, so I’m going to check both Recycle Bins, OneDrive, and the old user folders before using the laptop again.
