How can I reduce my laptop’s electricity usage?

My parents are concerned about our electricity bills, and I feel partly responsible because I use my Dell Vostro 15 3000 for studying several hours almost every day. I already use power-saving mode and keep the screen brightness at its lowest comfortable setting. I don't play games, but I'm wondering whether disabling music, replacing an interactive wallpaper with a static image, turning off Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth when they aren't needed, or using a program to stop unnecessary background activity would make a meaningful difference.

Laptops are already designed to be relatively efficient because they have to run from a small battery. Keep using power saver, reduce brightness to a comfortable level, and avoid unnecessary heavy programs, but there probably isn’t a special background-process tool that will meaningfully reduce your electricity bill. A plug-in power meter can show the laptop’s actual consumption and help identify which household appliances are using more energy.

I already use a power meter and only charge the laptop when the battery drops below about 30%, unplugging it around 80%. It looks like we should investigate other appliances instead.

Music and an animated wallpaper might use a little extra power, but the savings from disabling them would be extremely small. Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth can be turned off when you don’t need them, but that also won’t make a noticeable difference compared with switching off even one light or reducing use of a larger appliance.

Your laptop probably isn’t contributing much to the household bill. During light tasks such as studying or browsing, it may use roughly 5–15 watts, while heavier workloads can reach around 45–65 watts. A refrigerator, heater, oven, or other large appliance generally uses much more energy, so laptop optimizations will barely show up on the bill.
