How can I reduce the risk of a melted power connector on my RTX 5090 FE?

I just bought a second-hand RTX 5090 Founders Edition and am worried about the 12V-2x6 power connector or cable overheating and melting. I'm using a 1250W Gold-rated ATX 3.1 power supply with its native cable, without cable extensions, adapters, or third-party replacement cables. What can I do to reduce the risk?

Undervolting is a sensible extra precaution. A 5090 can often run at noticeably lower power without much performance loss, which reduces current through the connector. You can also cap frame rates or use an appropriate upscaling mode if you want to reduce sustained load, though you shouldnโt need to avoid normal gaming or high settings entirely. The connector design is still a potential failure point, so these steps reduce risk rather than guaranteeing it can never happen.

The basics matter most: use the PSUโs native 12V-2x6 cable, make sure it is fully inserted at both ends, and avoid sharp bends, sideways pressure, or tension right next to the GPU connector. The cable should have enough slack that the connector is not being pulled or twisted. Donโt use daisy-chained PCIe leads or questionable adapters.
MellowPine47: Iโm already using the native cable, so Iโll reseat both ends and make sure the cable has plenty of clearance and slack.

For additional protection, consider a current-monitoring device such as the wired version of the WireView Pro II, which is compatible with the Founders Edition. Some power supplies also include built-in connector monitoring, such as MSI models with Safeguard+ or Corsair models with PinProtect+. These options can help identify an imbalanced or overloaded connection, but they add another connector interface, so installation quality still matters. Inspect the plug periodically for discoloration, heat damage, or a connector that is not fully seated.
SilverCedar5: A monitoring device is useful for catching abnormal current distribution, but it isnโt a substitute for a properly inserted cable with no sharp bend at the connector.

BrightMango8: Iโd start with a mild undervolt and test stability rather than drastically lowering the cardโs performance. The goal is simply to reduce unnecessary power draw.
