How can I remove Google Photos backups without deleting pictures from my Android phone?

I'm using an Android phone and backed up my photos to Google Photos, but my Google storage is now full. When I delete photos in the app, they also disappear from my device. I also tried using "Undo backup," but Google Photos says it can't do that while photos are still uploading. How can I remove the cloud copies while keeping the originals on my phone?

Open Google Photos in a web browser at photos.google.com and delete the backed-up photos there instead of deleting them through the Android app. That should remove the cloud copies without removing the originals stored on your phone. Double-check that the photos are still present on your device before emptying the Google Photos trash.

I’ll try that, thanks.

It worked! I was worried the phone might delete them later because it’s slow, but the pictures are still on my device.
