How Can I Restore an Old Surface Pro and Reinstall Windows?

I recently found an old Surface Pro that had been unused for roughly 10 years. I ran a large batch of Windows Updates, after which the operating system appeared to become corrupted. While trying to repair it, I may have erased the existing Windows installation, and I have not been able to reinstall Windows from a USB drive. I'm not very experienced with computer repairs, so I may have misunderstood what happened. I'd also like to recover the old files if that is still possible. A repair shop quoted me about $100, but I'm unsure whether the device is worth repairing or capable of handling modern software compared with buying a newer laptop. What would be the best next step?

First identify the exact Surface Pro model and check its specifications. A third-generation model with an i5 processor can still handle basic browsing and light tasks, though it will be far slower than a current laptop. Installing a lightweight Linux distribution could also be an option if Windows remains difficult to restore.

If the drive was actually erased or reformatted, recovering the old files becomes difficult. Specialized recovery software might find something, but using the device or reinstalling Windows can overwrite the remaining data. If those files matter, stop experimenting and contact a professional recovery service before doing anything else.

The main issue is figuring out why the USB installer will not boot. Surface devices often require specific boot and recovery steps, so look up the instructions for the exact model and confirm that the USB was created correctly. Microsoftโs Surface recovery image may work better than a generic Windows installation drive.

For basic use, the Surface may still be serviceable, but it probably wonโt compete with a newer laptop for speed, battery life, or software support. If the files are not important, paying for a repair or trying the official recovery process could be reasonable; otherwise, put the recovery cost toward a newer machine.

CrispWillow5: Some older Surface models need the official recovery image and drivers rather than a standard Windows USB. Once you know the model number, download the matching recovery files from Microsoft and follow that deviceโs boot instructions.
