How can I revitalize my slow laptop with a new OS?

I'm currently running Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment, but I'm not a fan of its slow application startup times, and I've had some packages crash when starting up. My laptop has an Intel Core i5 8th Generation processor, 8GB of DDR4 RAM, and an Nvidia MX150 with 4GB of VRAM. I'm considering switching to Debian 13 with KDE Plasma 6. Would that be a good choice for improving performance and getting a stable, modern look?

If your laptop has a traditional HDD, the slowness might just be something you'll have to live with, as not much can be done to speed that up. But yeah, switching to Debian can definitely help since snaps make Ubuntu feel laggy lately. It's a solid choice for a smoother experience!

You might want to look into using Debian! A lot of the sluggishness in Ubuntu could be due to snaps causing those slow startup issues, which won't be a problem on Debian. Itโs known for stability and should run great on your hardware. Good luck with the switch!

Debian is definitely a good option for avoiding those pesky snap issues. The students often make Ubuntu feel sluggish. If you're interested in alternatives, Fedora could be worth checking out for a modern system, but Debian will give you that stability you're looking for!
