I'm trying to download the GClip VST plugin, but the download is blocked with a "Virus detected" message. The laptop has McAfee installed as well as Windows Defender, and I'm using Brave, so I'm not sure which program is stopping it. A normal download warning would be understandable, but the download controls are disabled entirely. What's the safest way to determine whether this is a false positive and install the plugin if the file is legitimate?

Brave can block uncommon downloads, but a hard “Virus detected” message usually means the browser or an antivirus program intercepted the file. Don’t immediately disable every protection. First, make sure you’re downloading GClip from the developer’s official site, check whether the file has a valid digital signature or published checksum, and scan it with multiple reputable scanners. If several tools flag it, don’t run it. If only one scanner flags it and the source is trustworthy, it may be a false positive that the developer needs to address.
The block may be coming from McAfee rather than Brave. Check the security history or quarantine screen in both McAfee and Windows Security to see which product detected the file and what threat name it reported. You can usually restore or allow a file from there, but only after verifying the source and scanning it. Avoid turning off real-time protection or browser safety features just to force the download; re-enable anything you temporarily change afterward.
A warning that the program is uncommon is different from “Virus detected.” If the download button is greyed out, the security software has probably quarantined or blocked the file rather than merely warning you. Look for a less compressed or properly signed version from the plugin developer, and consider contacting them about the detection. A clean scan is helpful, but it isn’t absolute proof that a file is safe.
I eventually found that Brave Safe Browsing and McAfee real-time protection were both involved. A multi-engine scan showed no detections, but I’ll verify the download source and check the security history before allowing anything.
