My iPad's battery failed and has started expanding, lifting the screen slightly away from the frame. Repair shops quoted more than $100, so I'm planning to replace it. The iPad currently only shows the charging indicator when I press the power button. Is it safe to charge it briefly so I can erase my personal data, or is there another way to protect my information before disposing of it? I'm worried the swollen battery could catch fire or rupture.

If you can access the iPad without charging it, back up anything important and sign out of your Apple Account, then erase all content and settings. However, with a visibly swollen battery, safety comes first—avoid pressing on the screen, puncturing the battery, or forcing the device open.
Take the whole device to a certified electronics or battery recycling facility and explain that the battery is swollen. Don’t put it in household trash or a regular recycling bin. If you’re especially concerned about the data, tell the recycler and ask about secure destruction after the battery has been made safe.
Don’t plug in or charge an iPad with a swollen battery. Take it to an Apple Store, an authorized repair provider, or an electronics recycler that handles lithium-ion batteries. They can make the device safe and arrange proper disposal. A qualified technician may be able to disconnect the battery and power the iPad safely, but don’t try that yourself.
If the iPad is still connected to your Apple Account and Find My is enabled, use the Find My app or Apple’s account tools to erase it remotely. After the erase finishes, remove it from your account so the next owner or recycler isn’t blocked by Activation Lock. Don’t attempt to charge it just to perform a local reset.
Remote erasing only works if the iPad can connect to the internet, but keeping it linked to your account still helps prevent someone from activating and using it.
