How can I safely pack my 27-inch monitor for a flight in checked luggage?

I'm planning to bring a 27-inch monitor with me on a flight, checking it as luggage, and I want to ensure it arrives safely. The monitor's value is about $1000 at my destination, but I bought it for around $350. Shipping isn't a viable option because of hefty import taxes. I have the original box and foam, but it won't fit in my suitcase unless I modify it. The flight will be about two hours long, and the monitor is a flat screen.

I'm considering two packing methods.

**Option 1:** Cut about an inch off each side of the original box and foam so that it fits in my luggage, then wrap it in bubble wrap and surround it with clothes for added shock absorption.

**Option 2:** Remove the monitor from the box completely and layer it in the suitcase with clothes, wrapping paper, cut foam or box sides, and then the monitor itself, surrounded by more clothes.

I'm concerned about how baggage handlers might treat it, the pressure on the screen, and whether modifying the original packaging will affect its protection. Has anyone flown with a monitor before? Also, would marking the bag as 'fragile' make a difference?

You could try checking the monitor in its original box. It might cost a bit more for extra baggage, but that's usually the safest way. Just make sure the box isn't too bulky and you might not need to stuff it in a suitcase at all.

Honestly, I’d recommend shipping it with the original packing. You're already worried about damage, and shipping might actually be cheaper if you check places like pirate ship for rates. Just watch the timing on that.

I’ve traveled with monitors before and just wrapped mine in a thick blanket with clothes around it for padding. Keep it level in the bag to prevent any flexing. That method has worked for me each time.
