How can I safely remove petroleum jelly from a USB-C plug?

My wired headphones were stored in a purse next to a small tub of petroleum jelly, and the cap came off. The USB-C plug ended up in the jelly. I removed the visible residue with tissue and a cotton swab, but I suspect some remains inside the connector. The headphones still might work, but I don't want to risk contaminating or damaging my phone or laptop's USB-C port. What is the safest way to clean and test the plug?

A little gentle warmth can make the jelly less viscous and easier to remove, but donโ€™t overheat the connector. A hair dryer on a low setting for a short time, with the plug facing downward, is enough. Follow that with an alcohol cleaning and allow it to dry fully.

Use an electronics contact cleaner if you already have one, provided the label says it is safe for plastics and leaves no residue. Wear eye protection, use it in a ventilated area, and wait until everything is completely dry before plugging the headphones in.

Petroleum jelly generally wonโ€™t cause an electrical short by itself, but it can leave an insulating, sticky film and may transfer into the deviceโ€™s port. Cleaning the headphone plug before testing it is still the best approach. You shouldnโ€™t need WD-40 or other petroleum-based products, since they can leave additional residue.

Unplug the headphones and wipe away as much jelly as possible first. Then clean the connector with high-concentration isopropyl alcoholโ€”90% or higher is preferableโ€”using a lint-free cloth or a very small brush. Let it evaporate completely and check that the plug is no longer slippery before connecting it to anything. Avoid flooding the connector or using metal tools.

SilverPanda18: Isopropyl alcohol is the suitable choice here; it should remove the remaining petroleum jelly and evaporate without leaving much residue.
