How can I safely run my DDR5 memory faster without crashes?

I'm building my first PC and want to increase the memory speed without causing blue screens, random restarts, or other instability. I initially tried enabling EXPO, but the system became unreliable. I'm using a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, an ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi7 R2 motherboard, a Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB (2×16GB) DDR5-6000 CL36 kit, and an MSI MPG A1000GS PCIE5 1000W power supply. The BIOS and AMD chipset drivers are updated. I also discovered that this exact memory kit may not appear on the motherboard's memory QVL, so I'd appreciate advice on troubleshooting it and finding a stable speed or configuration.

Make sure the two modules are installed in the recommended dual-channel slots, usually A2 and B2—the second and fourth slots from the CPU. Also check whether the exact kit is listed on the motherboard’s QVL. Corsair sells very similar kits with different suffixes: some are validated for Intel XMP, while others include AMD EXPO validation. An EXPO-certified replacement kit may be the simplest solution if this one remains unstable.

XMP-only memory can still work on an AMD system, so that label does not prove the kit is incompatible. However, a QVL-listed EXPO kit generally gives you a better chance of running DDR5-6000 reliably.

Start by running the memory at its default JEDEC settings rather than enabling EXPO. If the system is stable at stock settings, the problem is probably the memory overclock or compatibility rather than a defective component. Your processor officially supports DDR5-5600 with two DIMMs, while DDR5-6000 is commonly achievable but not guaranteed. Try EXPO and manually lower the memory speed to 5600 MT/s, then test stability before increasing it gradually.

Update the motherboard BIOS and chipset drivers first, then load BIOS defaults and change only one setting at a time. With an X3D processor, the gaming benefit from pushing memory beyond a stable DDR5-5600 or DDR5-6000 configuration is usually small, so stability is more important than reaching the advertised maximum. If the kit is not on the QVL, exchanging it for a 2×16GB DDR5-6000 kit specifically validated for AMD EXPO may save a lot of troubleshooting.

Use a memory test such as MemTest86 or another thorough RAM-testing tool after every BIOS change. Check Windows crash logs too, since the restarts could have another cause. If errors appear even at the default JEDEC speed, test each module separately and consider a faulty DIMM, motherboard, or CPU memory controller.
