How can I safely test a used RTX 3080 before buying it?

I found a Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC listed for $275 after negotiating the seller down from $350, which is around the going price for this model in my area. The seller doesn't have the rest of a working computer, so he can't demonstrate the card running. I could bring my own PC to a library or another public place, but I'm wondering whether simply seeing the card light up is enough to show that it works. Professional testing services charge about $100, which would make the deal much less appealing. Is bringing my full system to test the card a reasonable plan, and what should I verify before paying?

The safest option is to bring your complete system, including a monitor, and test the card in person. Once it boots, check Device Manager or GPU-Z to confirm it is actually a 3080, then run something like NVIDIA-SMI and a short benchmark or game to check for crashes, artifacts, overheating, and unusual fan behavior. $275 is a good price if it passes those checks.

That makes sense. Carrying my large case is inconvenient, but if I’m going to test it properly I should probably bring the monitor too and make the trip worthwhile.

Lights turning on only confirms that the card is receiving some power. You really want it to produce a display and successfully reach the BIOS or operating system. If possible, boot into Windows and run a quick graphics test rather than relying on the LEDs alone.

A public location can work, but get permission before swapping hardware on their equipment. Don’t assume a library computer will have a compatible power supply, case clearance, or the right connectors. If the seller won’t allow a basic test in your own system or another agreed-upon setup, treat that as a major risk, since used graphics cards can have hidden problems even when they power on.
