I work aboard a cargo vessel on 7–8 month contracts and spend only about two months a year at home. I'd like to bring my desktop gaming PC so I can play at 4K while at sea. I've heard that shipboard electricity can have voltage fluctuations, electrical noise, unusual grounding, and occasional outages, but I'm not sure how serious those issues are or how to protect my system. Bringing a UPS on international flights is difficult because of its battery, and buying or leaving one on every ship would be expensive. My PC uses a Corsair SF1000 power supply. What protection would you recommend besides switching to a laptop, and are there any other concerns such as vibration, humidity, salt air, transport, or cabin power limits?

First check with the company’s electrical or IT department before bringing anything aboard. Ships can use different voltages, grounding arrangements, and sometimes isolated or ungrounded systems. Personal high-power equipment may also be restricted, and a gaming PC plus a 4K monitor could trip a cabin circuit. A UPS may even complain or refuse to operate on some shipboard systems, so it is not automatically the right answer.
A gaming laptop or handheld is the simplest and safest option because the built-in battery bridges brief interruptions and the hardware is designed to be moved. If 4K gaming is non-negotiable, a compact desktop in a rugged, well-secured case is possible, but it adds transport, power, vibration, humidity, and airline baggage problems. Make sure the performance advantage is worth those complications.
The bigger practical risks may be transport and the marine environment. A desktop can be damaged by vibration and rolling, especially a heavy graphics card pulling on the PCIe slot. Transport it in a rigid, padded case and use a strong GPU support bracket; remove and separately cushion the graphics card during travel if the case design allows it. Keep the machine away from condensation and salty air, and inspect it for corrosion and dust more often than you would at home.
A custom case or a rugged equipment case with the monitor mounted in the lid can make transport much safer. Just make sure the GPU and other heavy parts are firmly supported rather than relying on the slot retention clip alone.
A UPS with a sealed lead-acid battery may be easier to use aboard than a lithium power station, but it will still be heavy and may not be allowed or worthwhile for every deployment. You could buy one locally before boarding or have one shipped to the company’s office or port ahead of time, provided the vessel approves it. That is something to confirm before spending the money.
A good, properly sized PSU already filters a lot of the noise and handles minor fluctuations. Use a reputable surge protector or shipboard-rated power conditioner if the crew approves it, and don’t rely on a cheap power strip. An oversized, high-quality PSU is a better choice than trying to install a complicated consumer UPS, although no PSU can keep the PC running through a blackout. Make regular backups and keep a bootable installer and drivers available in case an abrupt shutdown damages the operating system.

Mission-critical equipment often has specialized shipboard-rated protection, but that doesn’t mean a consumer UPS will behave the same way. The vessel’s electrician should be able to tell you what is permitted and what equipment already works on that circuit.
